THE largest and smallest boats competing in the Around Malolo Island race took out first and second place at the 29th Fiji Regatta Week at Musket Cove Island Resort in the Mamanuca's.
Kiwi Jason Guard on the yacht Spirit had a strong performance and led the pack during the two-hour race which ended and began at the Musket Cove marina.
However, Guard's lead was threatened by the only hobie competing in the race. Owned by Fred Ackie, Bogiwalu tailed the much larger catamaran throughout the race.
Guard finished the race in 1 hour 36 minutes while Ackie crossed the finish line in 1 hour 50 minutes.
Ackie said he could not beat the other much larger boats in his hobie but was happy that he could come second.
"It was all down to good conditions and I'm very happy with the results," said Mr Ackie.
Race organiser Jack Hargrove said the race was competitive and there were fast times recorded.
Last year's winner, Take a Break, came in fourth finishing in a time of 2 hours 6 minutes.
Participants this year were from New Zealand, Australia, Germany and Britain.
