Reported beating of nightclub patrons by bouncers is causing concern and to curb this, the police have deployed officers to tackle the problem.

Confirming this to The Fiji Times, CID director SSP Vakacegu Toduadua said nightclub bouncers had no right to beat patrons.

"The roles of bouncers at nightclubs are to protect the patrons, provide security and ensure safety — they are not there to beat them up," SSP Toduadua said.

He said nightclub bouncers were not allowed to harass or abuse patrons.

SSP Toduadua also cleared speculation surrounding media reports of a man who died after being allegedly beaten up by nightclub bouncers in Suva two weeks ago.

"The media reports are wrong," he said.

"He was not brutally assaulted by nightclub bouncers according to investigations. His post-mortem examination results contradict the claim that he was brutally beaten up."

In another incident, a man was also allegedly beaten up by bouncers outside a nightclub in Suva in August.

Members of the public have been urged to report such matters to the police immediately.
