GOVERNMENT was not approached to waive a $575 hospital fee on patients treated for free by visiting medical specialists from New Zealand last week.

A statement released from the Ministry of Information yesterday said the team of heart specialists failed to make contact with the Ministry of Health about its activities.

The statement said no patient was denied an angiogram for financial reasons, however, because of a machine malfunction, their procedures had been postponed until October when another team of doctors visits Fiji to perform the same procedures.

The team had expressed disappointment that six patients could not be treated last week because they could not afford the fee.

The government statement said to avoid communication breakdowns, a liaison officer would be appointed to co-ordinate the team's activities with the ministry.
