Lautoka four for Eastgate

THE Lautoka Hockey Association will enter four teams in the Eastgate Memorial Marist Hockey Championship in Suva next week.

The LFA will register teams in both the men's and women's categories.

Blue Star and Mates will represent the Sugar City.

LHA secretary Martin Coffin said they had been holding tournaments for the past three weeks in the build up to the Marist event.

He said the switch from the grass courts to the artificial courts in Suva would be an obstacle for them.

"In actual fact we have been having tournaments each weekend as a build up to the Marist competition," Coffin said.

"This has helped in the team's preparation as they have got more game time. The challenge in Suva will be tough. We will be playing in their back yard."

"They are used to the artificial turf and we are not. But we hope to do our best and try and match up to them. The turf will be one factor that will affect us."

"There is a big difference playing on the two surfaces. The grass turf is jumpy. On the level surface it will be straight and flatter. The skill level of the players in Lautoka is up to par with the guys in Suva. The set back in Lautoka is the facility. If we get an artificial turf, it will then be great."

Meanwhile the postponed semi-final matches of last week's 7 a-side tournament were cancelled yesterday.

Instead friendly 11 a-side matches were played.
