NAVY successfully defended the Escott Shield with a 21-14 victory over Army at Albert Park yesterday.

Led by inspirational skipper Ilitomasi Nawalu, Navy did not settle well into the game as Army used everything in their arsenal to pry the shield away from its holders.

Both teams were locked 14-all when Navy hooker Josaia Cikaitoga scored a converted try after an intercept to seal the win.

The crunch was on from the opening whistle as both teams struggled for the advantage until Cikaitoga's try in the final minute of play. Army skipper Napolioni Naulia led his troops well from the back of the scrum.

Suva rep and Army winger Jone Saukuru was on fire with some blistering runs and is already putting his hand up for selection in the Farebrother-Sullivan trophy challenge.

Navy coach Chief Petty Officer Solomoni Spooner said his boys did the hard yards for the victory.

"I am happy with the win, this is what we came for, we knew it was not going to be easy but the boys gave their best and I congratulate them for the win," Spooner said.

The sailors outscored the brigade from Delainabua two tries to one.
