Put restrictions on places of worship

EVERY religion must be protected and guaranteed their existence, says former parliamentarian Sayed Abdul Khaiyum.

He, however, also said in his submission to the Constitution Commission that adequate control must be placed on establishment of places of worship.

"Those that are now located in residential areas be persuaded to relocate to appropriate localities," Mr Khaiyum said. "And some form of restrictions be placed on those currently located in residential areas against noise nuisance."

Mr Khaiyum said in his view, the present trend of places of worship springing up everywhere and anywhere without any control was a result of total failure and laxity on the part of our municipalities and town and country planners.

He also submitted that Fiji should be a secular state and no one religion should be imposed on any person or community.
