SAFE Shuttle Service Company Limited, which has been operating in Suva for the past 37 years, has proposed that its operation be legalised.
In submissions to the Constitution Commission, company assistant manager Jona Robanakadavu said although there had been some agreement between the company and the Land Transport Authority their existence had to be finalised in black and white.
Mr Robanakadavu told the commission they had been illegally operating in Suva for many years. He said shuttle service cars were in operation long before minivans but had not been given the same recognition as mini-vans until recently.
Unlike taxis, shuttle cars do not use meters. They operate on fixed routes and have to be pre-booked in order for one to use.
Mr Robanakadavu told the commission it was a door-to-door service in which they picked their passengers from their homes and dropped them off at their various destinations.
He requested the commission to consider their humble plea to have the government issue them a permit immediately.
