Biggest risk factors

AN intervention cardiologists says Fijians of Indian descent faced a higher risk of suffering from obstructed arteries.

Doctor Patrick Kay is one of two intervention cardiologists in the country to perform angiograms and angioplasty on 50 patients.

He said diabetes, high cholesterol, bad blood pressure and smoking were the biggest risk factors.

However, Dr Kay also said that when an iTaukei male complained of chest pain “it’s real”.

He said this was because many iTaukei men do not present themselves to the hospital until it was almost too late.

Dr Kay advised people facing shortness of breath and chest pain when walking up a hill to visit a doctor.
