A 75-MEMBER medical group made up of surgical, angio and pacemakers teams are in the country to mend hearts.
Yesterday, a comprehensive team made up of two interventional cardiology, four cath lab and critical care unit nurses and a radiographer worked out of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
The teams are brought in by Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation.
Angio team leader Aleem Shah said this was their second trip to Fiji with the first being last year.
He said they hoped to perform angiograms and angioplasty on 50 people this year, 13 more than 2011.
Intervention cardiologist Doctor Patrick Kay said the team was not in Fiji to takeover but to train the locals.
He was hopeful that in years to come, locals could do the operation.
The team returns to New Zealand this Saturday.
