Craft day for the needy

IN a bid to eradicate poverty and to assist 40 underprivileged families within the Lautoka community, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society is holding a Craft Market Day for poor families.

St Vincent De Paul Society president Mereani Cagi said the initiative was to enable families to be self-sufficient instead of waiting for help from the group.

"We give them food vouchers every month and with this craft day we hope to encourage them to provide for themselves instead of waiting for assistance that we give them on a monthly basis," said Mrs Cagi.

She said the 40 families were very poor and unable to provide for themselves.

"Even though many of them have no regular source of income, most of them know how to bake, weave and sew and that's something that we want to help them with," Mrs Cagi said.

"With this craft day, the group has been given a chance to make things they can sell. We will only provide a venue and the market for them," said Mrs Cagi.

The Craft Market Day will be held at Our Lady Perpetual Help Parish hall in Lautoka on September 29.
