Film potential hinges on upgrade

VANUA Levu has potential sites for movie productions with the presence of stunning locations and virgin territory, says Film Fiji chief executive officer Florence Swamy.

However, the lack of infrastructure available, shooting schedules and budgetary considerations, production teams recently hosted in the country have opted to shoot in Viti Levu and nearby islands.

"But with recent developments like the upgrading of Labasa Airport and greater room inventory, some sites and locations in the north have been eyed by film-makers for movie productions," Mrs Swamy said.

"Film Fiji has facilitated the work of smaller productions that were interested in filming mostly around Savusavu and Taveuni area but we continue to provide location details and photos of areas in the north to all productions that contact us for locations options," she said.

Mrs Swamy said such landmarks were evident by the filming of the "Survivor" series which was shot in the north of Labasa back in 2006.

She said foreign-based production companies like British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the United Kingdom were currently shooting a documentary at Namena Island and in Savusavu.

"Another production team from the United States of America also shot a documentary at Vetaua Island near Taveuni this year," she said.
