SYDNEYSIDER Josh Beard starred during the 2012 Mana Open Swim which ended at the Mana Island Resort yesterday.

Beard from South Coogee, a coastal suburb in south eastern Sydney, turned heads during the two-day event making a clean sweep in all four races.

The 19-year-old won the 500 metres, one kilometre, three kilometre and 10 kilometre events.

Beard rated the competition as "absolutely fantastic".

He said the wind was perfect and there wasn't much chop in the ocean.

"It was perfect swimming as it was pretty much a flat course," Beard said.

"You can swim over the coral and it was just beautiful to see everything. I'm looking forward to coming back next year. Then I will bring my whole family.

"I will see what we can do next year but I would absolutely encourage young kids to take up ocean swimming. Children as young as eight years old can do it back in Sydney. It is so much fun with the atmosphere around you."

In the 500 metre event, Beard clocked seven minutes and 45 seconds. He finished ahead of fellow Australian Mark Anderson who timed seven minutes and 57 seconds. Andrew Jacobs was third in seven minutes and 59 seconds.

In the one kilometre event, Beard stopped the clock in 18 minutes and 33 seconds. Georgie Harwood of Australia was second in 22 minutes and 47 seconds while Somer McMaster, also of Australia, finished third in 24 minutes and 31 seconds.

In the three kilometres race, Beard timed 44 minutes 04 seconds. Sean Green of Australia, was second in 46 minutes and 51 seconds. Philip Dickinson of New Zealand was third in 46 minutes and 55 seconds. In the ten kilometres event, Beard finished in two hours 22 minutes and 24 seconds. Dickinson was second in two hours 31 minutes 18 seconds. Green was third in a time of two hours 40 minutes and 53 seconds.
