Long walks end at rugby final

THE daily long walk from Newtown to Valelevu to train everyday will be the Newtown rugby team's inspiration when they face Police White in the Koroturaga Trophy final tomorrow.

The Newtown rugby team does not have a training ground so they commute daily to the Valelevu ground.

Newtown team manager Moape Jr said after all the difficulties they've faced throughout the year, they believe it was time the boy's hardwork was rewarded.

"A win tomorrow will be the icing on the cake," Moape said.

Moape said they started the year playing with an old set of uniforms but it was through the help of a Good Samaritan that they received a new set of jerseys.

"A Fijian man living in the US saw pictures of the Newtown team on Facebook playing in our old jersey and he offered to buy us a new set," Moape said.

"We would like to thank Vili Avoi and I believe his assistance will surely lift the boys' performance tomorrow.

"About 80 per cent of our players are unemployed and to be playing in the final with a new set of jerseys will surely boost the team's morale.

"We also want to win and make a name for ourselves as we are looking for a sponsor.

"Winning the Koroturaga Trophy will surely attract potential sponsors."

Newtown is one of the new teams in the Suva rugby competition and they have surprised the other big names in the Koroturaga competition.

The Seci Talewesi-captained side defeated RKSOB in the semi-final.

Turaga said last year the team finished in ninth position and missed out on the Koroturaga quarter-finals.
