THERE has been a reduction in the number of re-offenders returning to prison to serve their sentence within 24 months of being discharged.
This has been confirmed by Fiji Corrections Service spokeswoman Ana Tudrau-Tamani.
She said the number of re-offenders was reduced by 42 reoffenders last year when compared to 78 in 2010 and 79 in 2009.
"So far we have received 29 reoffenders — 20 in the first quarter and nine in the second quarter," she said.
Mrs Tudrau-Tamani said offences carried out by reoffenders varied from robbery to assault and theft. "Some offenders return for the crimes they committed earlier, which cases were pending while under their previous period of incarceration," she said.
Mrs Tudrau-Tamani said they were continuously looking at ways to improve their system to ensure the number of re-offenders was minimised.
