Prominent businessman and former Lami mayor Jasper Singh was on his own 'Road to Damascus' two years ago when he was being rushed to hospital because his brain was haemorrhaging.
"I called out to all the gods that I used to serve before and no one came to my help. As I was rushed to the Suva Private Hospital and bleeding all the way, I gave my life to Jesus Christ. I was calling all the gods I knew, no one came to help me and I saw my wife praying as she was driving me to the Private hospital. I knew I was gonna die, I knew I was gonna die, but I just asked, "Jesus if you save me today I will be yours forever".
Jasper was rushed to the Suva Private Hospital and after all precautionary measures, medical emergencies undertaken and the relevant tests carried out, he received the best news he could ever hope for.
"The doctor who came to treat me said, "Mr Singh, you're one lucky man, you're one lucky person. You had a very high pressure. You were really in a state where the signs say brain haemorrhage. You're lucky to be alive because very few people survive brain haemorrhage."
Adds Jasper: "I asked the doctor: "how long did I have to live ? He said that with brain haemorrhage you have to be alive in the hospital to survive because they only get four minutes to treat you and if they don't get the four minutes to treat you, your chances are very, very slim to survive.
"That's when I knew that I was only given four minutes to live and I came through that," Jasper said.
From that day, Jasper changed and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord as his saviour and the only true living God.
"And from that day too, our business has picked up, our business has expanded through the grace of God and that's why you can see my number (plate) which says Psalm 91," he says.
That happened two years and Jasper acknowledged that he was suffering from health problems prior to the life changing experience he had.
Apart from the health problems, Jasper was set to lose his family heirloom, the Shore Buses bus company as he was staring at a possible bankruptcy.
"If it wasn't for Him (Jesus Christ) we would have been bankrupt two years ago and I am not ashamed to tell you that. I had pockets, people saw me for who I was, but I must admit that I had holes in my pockets. Christ mended that. Only He came and only He picked me up from where I was. Like I said, I couldn't pay my bills two years ago, I was penniless. I didn't know where to turn and that was one of the causes of the pressure and this is the bus industry where every penny counts," Jasper says.
On top of this, he had to buy $100 worth of medication per month to deal with stress problems that he was facing at the time. His transformation is nothing short of a miracle.
"After I converted, I threw all that out and now I am not on any kind of medication whatsoever and I am happier than ever before. I am not on any medication, I am physically fit, I am doing much more than what I was doing before but I am much more happier because I serve a God that is always faithful to me," he said.
Along with his wife and two sons, Jasper became a Christian.
Following his conversion, he made it a rule at the Shore Buses head office that at the start of each working day, everyone attended early morning devotion.
"Before the start of work every day, before anyone picks up a tool to start work, devotion has to be held and the management has to ensure this takes place every single day, even if I am away overseas," Jasper says.
So much so that he has changed the Shore Buses logo from its wings to become a wing of Christ and also that he designed the company shirts and T-shirts to show the words, 'Resurrection To A New Life In Christ'.
"When we turn to the Lord it is all gone, when we leave it to Him we let go and let Him handle it. Anything that happens now, I just commit it to the Lord at the start of my day and everything turns up much better. Every new day is better than the day before when you're in Christ," Jasper said.
