AN 18-year-old youth fractured his left elbow after the vehicle he was in tumbled when the driver tried to avoid a head-on collision with a taxi at Qelewaqa in Macuata last Friday.

Police said the driver of the three-tonne truck tried to overtake a sugarcane-laden truck but veered off the road and tumbled.

"While trying to avoid the collision, the driver swerved to the left and bumped the front fender of the cane truck and tumbled," police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said. "The boy was rushed to Labasa Hospital and later transferred to Suva for further medical treatment."

Ms Naisoro said the driver was taken in for questioning at the Labasa Police Station and released.

The incident has prompted a fresh warning from the police to drivers to be more careful when using the road, especially with school resuming today.

"The increasing number of accidents and fatalities on our roads is a serious concern and with our streets and highways expected to be busy, motorists are advised to exercise caution and keep a close watch on our children," Ms Naisoro said.

"Be alert and drive slowly especially when travelling near schools."
