NATIONAL rep Vikrant Chandra is on track to set a new course record during the RC Manubhai Ba Golf Open today after firing an impressive three-under par 66 in the opening round yesterday.

Another under par score today will see him beat former world number one Vijay Singh's record of even par 138 which he set in 1981.

The Suva lawyer was on fire in the opening round.

He carded seven birdies. Two bogeys and a double bogey were the only scores that prevented him from hitting a lower round.

Vikrant said he was happy with his form.

He said a few distractions on the back nine caused the bogeys.

"I was two-under after the first nine holes," Vikrant said.

"Then on the back nine there were a few distractions and I hit those bogeys. But I regrouped and birdied four of the last six holes.

"The course is in good condition. I hope to maintain my form.

"Coming into the event my aim was to beat Vijay Singh's record. I have made a very good start.

"I want to shoot another under par score in the second round."

Vikrant holds a six shot advantage going into the final round.

Rajen Singh, Rahul Kumar and Amitesh Chandra carded 72 yesterday.

Defending champion Anuresh Chandra will need a miracle to secure his eighth consecutive win after he hit 73.

Nadi's Mohammed Faiyaz carded 74, Roneel Prakash scored 76 while Olaf Allen Junior and Jalen Raman scored 77.

Krishneel Kumar leads the nett division with 62.
