Athlete drowns
MOGADISHU - One of Somalia's best female athletes drowned after the small boat she was riding in capsized off the Libyan coast during an attempted crossing to Italy for Olympic training a month ago, it has been revealed. The deputy chairman for Somalia's athletics federation said on Tuesday Samia Yusuf Omar was travelling from Ethiopia, where she lived, to Libya and then Italy to train for the London Olympics.
Arsenal snub
LONDON - New Everton signing Kevin Mirallas has revealed he turned down the chance to move to Arsenal after Gunners manager Arsene Wenger failed to guarantee him enough time on the pitch. The Belgian international striker, who was signed from Greek champions last week, said he took advice from national team colleague Marouane Fellaini before opting to sign on at Goodison Park.

LONDON - England international Danny Care has extended his contract with Premiership champions Harlequins that is set to keep the scrum-half at the club until 2016, the team's director of rugby Conor O'Shea has confirmed. The 25-year-old, who has struggled with alcohol problems, has made 33 appearances for England and scored a try in a man-of-the-match performance against South Africa last June in a Test match that finished 14-14.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - Organisers of the Lausanne Diamond League meeting say United States sprinter Justin Gatlin has ended his season early because of illness. Gatlin, the 100-metre bronze medallist at the London Olympics this month, was due to run on Thursday at the Athletissima meet in Switzerland.

NEW YORK - Roger Federer will be the top-seeded men's player at next week's US Open. The 17-time grand-slam champion was ranked No.1 in the latest ATP rankings released on Monday. Defending champion Novak Djokovic is seeded second and Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray third at the event. With Rafael Nadal out with knee problems, fellow Spaniard David Ferrer is the No.4 seed.
Swim bid
MIAMI - US distance swimmer Diana Nyad has abandoned her fourth attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida after battling lightning storms and swarms of jellyfish for more than two days, according to her crew. The 62-year-old hit the water on Saturday at the start of the 166-kilometre swim across the Florida Straits, hoping to be the first person to make the journey without a protective shark cage.

LONDON - Tottenham Hotspur have announced Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor has returned to the club on a permanent basis after signing from Manchester City. Adebayor, 28, spent last season on loan at White Hart Lane from City and scored 18 goals in 37 appearances to finish the campaign as the London club's leading scorer.
