THE road death toll has further increased after a man was hit by a bus early yesterday morning.
Police said the 21-year-old man died instantly when he was hit by a bus while walking towards Pacific Harbour with a friend after drinking kava.
The bus was travelling towards Suva from Nadi when the accident happened on the Queens Rd at about 2.30am.
"It was confirmed that the deceased went on to the road to pick something up when he was hit by the bus," said police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro.
She said the body of the deceased was at the Navua Hospital awaiting a post mortem examination while the bus driver was in police custody for questioning.
"The Fiji Police Force is once again pleading with members of the public to be careful on the roads, whether they are driving or walking," she said.
Ms Naisoro said the road death toll was 27 compared to 26 for the same period last year.
Two people died in a road accident near Vatukarasa Village in Sigatoka last Thursday night and a man was also killed on the road at Navutu in Lautoka the same night.
