NADI resident Bakshi Singh wants a reduction in the size of the military and its budget to be included in the new constitution.

He made the comments while making his submissions to the Constitution Commission in the Nadi Civic Centre yesterday.

"Our military operations created by the past government is very large, the expenditure is very high," he said.

"The set-up is so high as if we have a threat of superpowers. We should reduce military expenditure by deploying military personnel in other sectors such as agriculture, forest and fisheries so they can be self-funded." Mr Singh said the coup culture in Fiji should also end.

"The only way to stop the coup is to include in the constitution that the Prime Minister and the President of Fiji can seek international intervention if a coup happens."

Mr Singh said all Fijians should be offered free services.

"We want free education from kindergarten to university level for all Fijian students," he said.

"There should be free medical services for local and overseas treatment for all Fijians.

"Water supply should be made free and also electricity should be free for villages and settlements.

"Housing grants for first home buyers and sugar cane harvesting and transporting to be the responsibility of Fiji Sugar Corporation because they are making too much money."

Mr Singh said a government unit should be set up to buy directly from the farmers for export at market price.

Mr Singh said the iTaukei Lands Trust Board and the Lands Department should be empowered to repossess all vacant land and give these lands for use to other Fijians for income-generating sources.

He added there should only be 40 parliament members with 15 government ministers.
