FIJIAN should be the national language of Fiji while English should be the official language of the country.
Those were the sentiments of Rajendra Prasad as he made his submission to the Constitution Commission at Bhawani Dayal School in Nakasi yesterday.
He said English needed to be the official language as this would be needed to facilitate communication in the modern world.
"Fijian language is under the threat of extinction, every day a language is dying somewhere, by making it a national language we are actually enhancing it."
Mr Prasad also made a case for Fiji Hindi to be taught in schools in place of standard Hindi saying since Fiji Hindi was used in conversations, it should also have a place in school curriculum.
"I want Fiji Hindi to be the conversational language, when I am on the road or when I am in my house, I talk to my family members, to my iTaukei neighbours in Fiji Hindi, not standard Hindi."
