A DIVING expedition turned tragic when a 40-year-old man lost his life while diving for beche-de-mer in the early hours of Thursday.

According to police, the man of Drasa Vitogo in Lautoka drowned while diving with four other men in Yasawa waters.

Police revealed the man died after the rope that was tied to his waist got tangled as he tried to enter a small reef opening in Naviti around 4am.

The drowning toll now stands at 44 compared to 25 this time last year.

The authorities are urging those intending to go out to sea to take safety precautions at all times.

This is the second incident this month in which a person lost his life while diving.
