Commission hears prices outstrip wages

Taking into account the increasing cost of living in Fiji, the Wages Order should come into effect before the 2014 general elections.

This was one of the submissions made to the Constitution Commission at the Anglican Church in Nausori yesterday.

Apolosa Tacaqe, 55, who in his submission said he was a retired soldier, in his submission told the commission many citizens were underpaid.

"I strongly propose for the Wages Order to come into effect and not wait for the elections," Mr Tacaqe said.

He said supermarket shopping expenses far exceeded people's wages.

"In Fiji whether you are rich or poor you buy the goods for the same price," Mr Tacaqe said.

"Only those ranked highly and financially well off are happy to live in Fiji," the former soldier said.
