THE Vodafone Hibiscus Festival has adopted the theme Overcoming Non Communicable Disease for this year.

And in line with the theme, Vodafone Hibiscus King contestant John Jeffrey Davis has voiced the need for people to become more active in order to deal with the threats of NCDs.

"This year I will advocate the message: Choose health through physical activity (PA)," he said.

"PA is a vital component of the SNAP program and is an effective way of tackling obesity."

Mr Davis said after hearing about the festival theme, he was motivated to join the King's competition.

"To be honest, the theme is what initially got my attention to join this year's Vodafone Hibiscus. As a future health professional in training, I have seen the impact of NCDs on people's lives. I then thought of the Hibiscus Festival as a good platform to relay my message to the public."

The 23-year-old medical student hopes his qualities will help him to emerge victorious at the culmination of the festival.

"I am honest, dedicated and a team player.

"These qualities have helped me on the journey so far and hopefully will carry me through the week of Hibiscus.

"If chosen as Hibiscus King, I will definitely make an effort to continue advocating my message through health talks in schools and in everyday life with whomever I meet as I will be seeing patients during my training."
