A RECENT operation targeted at defective vehicles operating in Taveuni on Vanua Levu raked in a total fine of $4500.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the four-day operation carried out on Taveuni was a success.

She said the operation involved inspection of vehicles and defective parts.

"A total of 161 vehicles were inspected with 77 traffic infringement notices issued out to defective vehicles," Ms Naisoro said.

She said the operation was also an awareness campaign and around 112 brochures were issued to vehicle operators on the island. "Majority of the accidents that happen on our roads are caused by mechanical faults or defects on vehicles," Ms Naisoro said. "This operation should be a lesson for vehicle operators to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy in order to prevent accidents on our roads," she said.

Ms Naisoro said there would be more operations on the island for the sake of creating a safe road for all.
