THE Land Transport Authority has conducted training for territorial force soldiers to be road marshals.
The authority intends to recruit 5000 marshals by the end of the year to beef up awareness programs.
LTA chief executive Naisa Tuinaceva said the purpose of the road marshals was for them to be the eyes, ears and voice to the public by disseminating information, distributing pamphlets on road safety and addressing the importance of complying with road rules.
"Our objective is to be more effective in strategies to enhance road safety," Mr Tuinaceva said.
"We cannot do that single handedly because of the limited human capital that we have — that's why its imperative for us to improvise new approaches, thus the idea of having the assistance from the territorial force is a positive way forward.
"This is not new — there are similar strategies done globally in which the assistance of the disciplined institutions is applied."
The training of the TTF was held early this month at the Black Rock Army Camp at Nadi and at LTA Valelevu.
