The success of the National Beach Volleyball Championship over the weekend may see some young players named in the national beach volleyball training squad.
Ten men's and nine women's teams competed in the Hyo Shin-sponsored event at the National Beach Volleyball Courts in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Fiji Beach Volleyball Commission (FBVC) secretary Samuela Rabuku said many new players took part in the tournament.
He said the squad to be named this week would begin preparations towards defending their title at the Oceania Championships in Tahiti later this year.
"This was the first national beach volleyball tournament this year and turned out to be a huge success as we had a lot of support and drew a lot of spectators," Rabuku said. "The competition among the teams in the tournament was strong and national selectors got a look of the talent that is available," he said.
Eventual winners of the competition Epeli Ratubacaca and Nimilote Lua of Rebels are expected to be named in the training squad.
"We saw a lot of young talent like Laite and Talei from Suva, Mika Tuvoli and Ratubacaca of Rebels.
"Ratubacaca's performance in the tournament has seen him being named in the national training squad that will be named next week (this week), Rabuku said.
Current national reps Waisale Suka, Sakiusa Naivana Aisake Raratabu and Qilu Elliot were among the teams that Ratubacaca and Lua beat on their way to claim the top prize in the two-day event.
