ASSISTANT national sevens coach Etuate Waqa is expecting goal-oriented players to turn up to the first fitness test on Wednesday.

National selectors have named 48 players have been named for the fitness test after which the national training squad will be selected.

Waqa said the aim of the coaching and management staff was the 2012/2013 HSBC Sevens World Series and the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow.

He said they expected players to have the same goal and not just to don the national jumper.

Ten players from the 2011/2012 SWS, five former sevens reps and four national under-20 reps have been named in the squad and are required to attend the fitness test.

Notable omissions from the squad are player who have taken up overseas contracts — Nikola Matawalu, Nemani Nagusa, Waisea Nayacalevu and his brother Avenisi Vasuinubu.

Waqa said they had taken into consideration a lot of factors before naming the players for the fitness test.

"We have some big shoes to fill we have lost some key players and so we are looking to profile all players to see who can fit the requirement of a position and do the job," said the former dual international.

"As for the under-20 players, we are looking at developing them because they have been exposed at the Junior World Championships recently.

"We are looking towards the future. This is the right time to see how they perform so we know the right ways to mould them."

On the issue of the fitness test, he said the coaching and training staff are keeping in mind the first leg of the series which begins in October.

"This fitness test will give us an indication of the fitness levels of the players knowing most of them have been involved in the local major competition (Digicel Cup).

"Hopefully after the test, we get some indication on what we need to work on.

"So for the players that are coming in for the fitness test, just keep in mind that we all have a big task ahead of us and so they need to come with a purpose just like we the coaches have in mind that the series ends in May and straight after that is the World Cup in June," Waqa said.

The squad named after this fitness test will have another test in September after which the side for the normal preparations for the first leg of the series will be named to being camps.
