IN an effort to encourage more physical activity and participation from the general public, the Ministry of Health launched the national physical activity song and dance in Suva on Friday.
Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said it was the first time for the ministry to launch such physical activity at national level.
"Physical activity is one of the main risk factors of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Fiji," he said.
Mr Namotu said the ministry had seen that it was not only the adults who are not engaging themselves in physical activity but the children as well.
"The result is that more children are getting child obesity and child obesity is something that has been occurring again."
He said the lack of physical activity resulted in people getting diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Mr Namotu said the launch was a time for people to come together as a nation to address the issue of physical activity.
Meanwhile, the national song has been composed by renowned local musician Seru Serevi and dance choreographed by Fiji's Zumba queen Litiana Miller.
