The government is committed to achieving gender equality and empowerment of women in the country says Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.
Dr Luveni made these comments while officially closing the, Clean Pacific 2012 Campaign Symposium organised by Catholic Women's League on Friday at Novotel, Lami.
She said the commitment was part of the Millennium Development Goal Three that advocates for gender equality.
Dr Luveni said the harmonious development of men and women could be achieved by ensuring the two genders shared equal status, opportunities and rights to create an impartial, equal and just social atmosphere. "We believe that when women are empowered, the families, communities and the nation benefit. When we evaluate the advancement of gender equality, we should focus on quality and not quantity," Dr Luveni said.
