THE spiritual side of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) leader and former prime minister, Laisenia Qarase's life was highlighted by the second of the third character witnesses in the High Court in Suva yesterday.
Former president of the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma, Reverend Josateki Koroi told the court how Qarase's spiritual character inspired people who he had come into contact with.
Mr Koroi who comes from Mavana Village in Vanuabalavu, the same village as Qarase's, said he had known him for almost over 70 years.
He described Qarase as a true villager, a chief and a cultural leader.
"He is the cultural leader of the village who serves the people," Mr Koroi said.
He said most chiefs expected people to serve them but Qarase served the people.
"He is a man of dignity, honesty and a very practical man," Mr Koroi said.
He said Qarase did not lead the people by telling them what needed to be done, he did it himself.
Mr Koroi also labelled Qarase as an honest and humble man who loved his children and grandchildren.
He says Qarase is a Christian and in all his character displays his Christian faith.
