WORK on the world's first underwater resort — The Poseidon - off Katafanga Island in the Lau Group will begin once financing is secured.

Mark Deppe vice president of sales and marketing for Triton Submarines, the US company undertaking the mammoth project, confirmed to The Fiji Times that once long term funding was secured, construction would start on the proposed project - the first of its kind in the world.

Initial announcements by the company revealed that Triton Submarines proposed to build twenty two 550 square metre guest rooms and underwater restaurant and bar facilities in the world's first permanent one-atmosphere seafloor structure inside a lagoon adjacent to the island.

"Regarding the status of the Poseidon project, we are still working on capitalisation of the project and will begin construction as soon as we can," said Mr Deppe.

President of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association Dixon Seeto said his organisation had received many enquiries about the proposed resort.
