Ball boy learns from the sideline

TEENAGER Zaheed Hussein dreams to be a professional soccer player like Spanish icon Fernando Torres.

Hussein is one of the 18 ball boys at the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants and is the youngest of the lot.

The Tilak High School Fifth Former has been a ball boy in the Sugar City for the past three years.

Hussein said being a ball boy was no ordinary task.

Hussein said ball boys need to be alert.

He said the advantage enjoyed by ball boys was being close to the.

The enthusiastic footballer said he had picked up many tricks of the trade just by being on the sideline.

"My best player on the local scene is Alvin Avinesh," Hussein said.

"But I adore Fernando Torres. He is a great finisher. For me just being on the sideline in any game is a privilege. I learn a lot of skills."

The 17-year-old was part of the Lautoka Under-10 Inter District Competition wining team several years ago.

BOG ball boys co-ordinator Abdul Habib said a total of six ball boys were required for each match in the tournament.

He said they rotated the ball boys for every game.

"First we have had to get the consent of the parents so these boys could be part of the tournament," Habib said.
