CASES of outstanding water bills dating back to the 1980s are still being sorted out by the Water Authority of Fiji.

Authority chief executive Opetaia Ravai confirmed they had received numerous cases from some villages in the north and other parts of the country.

While he did not reveal the amount owed by defaulting customers, Mr Ravai said they had received reports and were attending to them.

"The authority and relevant government ministries are closely working together on this issue and we are also liaising with villagers to sort out the cases," he said.

"No decisions have been reached so far because talks are still in progress."

By last week the authority had detected 779 illegal connections to its national reticulation system.

Authority spokeswoman Kelera Serelini earlier said 107 customers had come forward to regularise their connection since the amnesty period began on May 14.

She said the authority had since collected $12,770 in revenue.

The amnesty ends on August 14.
