BEFORE asking for aid and assistance, the community should get together as a unit and raise funds towards worthwhile projects.
This was the view of Vunato Quality Community Early Childhood Education committee member Maria Rabici.
Speaking at a presentation hosted by Save the Children Fiji in Lautoka on Tuesday, Mrs Rabici said the hand-out culture that was prevalent in many communities had to end.
"When SCF approached our community with the idea to set up an early childhood education centre with our assistance and involvement, we got together and fundraised as a community — selling roti parcels and juice along with barbecue serves and managed to build the preschool with the funds raised," she said.
The Vunato preschool is one of eight centres in the Western Division built with assistance from SCF.
