VOTER registration centres will remain open for students aged between 16 and 17 after the eight-week electronic voter registration period ends at the end of next month.

This was confirmed by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as he addressed students at St Thomas High School in Lautoka yesterday.

The eight-week EVR period, which began on Tuesday, will end at the end of August.

However, Commodore Bainimarama said: "I urge all of you who are of voting age, who haven't already, to go and register. You are the future of Fiji. You must stand up and make your voices be heard."

He said a great number of voters would be under the age of 35 and would be first-time voters.

"Much of this is due to my government's decision to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, empowering young Fijians like yourselves to participate in the elections process in order to impact the direction of our nation."

On Thursday, the Ministry of Education announced that it would be making arrangements for all eligible students to register for the 2014 General Election.

Ministry permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal said arrangements were to be made and implemented to ensure all students 16 years and above were registered so they would be able to vote when the 2014 elections were held.

Dr Lal in a statement said: "All principals are requested to provide lists of students who have turned 16 this year and these are students who will be in forms Five, Six and some will be in Form Four."
