A 32-year-old-man fronted the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday for the alleged death of a 10-year-old boy at Korovuto in Nadi earlier this year.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the man — Irshaad Khan of Tunalia, Nadi — was being charged with one count of occasioning death by dangerous driving.

"Khan has been given $1000 bail with surety and a plea was deferred to a later date as Khan has been instructed to get legal counsel," Ms Naisoro said.

The case will be recalled on the 24th of next month.

Ms Naisoro said although the incident had generated a lot of interest, police would await the outcome of the courts.

"This case has caused a lot of media hype in the past and the Fiji Police Force would like to reiterate the importance of letting justice take its course," she said.

"All persons are innocent until proven guilty by the court of law, and as the case is before the courts the Fiji Police Force will no longer make any comment on the issue."

The 10-year-old boy died at Korovuto after he was hit by a light goods truck travelling in the opposite direction.

He was rushed to the Nadi Hospital, before being transported to the Lautoka Hospital but attempts to save him were unsuccesful.
