A GROUP of soldiers at the Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa took time out yesterday to clean up the Babasiga Ashram as part of their Infantry Day celebrations.

Officer-in-charge Major Penisio Mamao said the initiative was a social responsibility aimed at assisting the less fortunate in society.

"On this particular day every year, we usually clean up the senior citizen's home or the Labasa School for Special Education compound because we feel it's our duty to help them," Major Mamao said. "Not only are we helping them through this activity but we are also offering them some love and care as most of them are neglected by their loved ones."

He said Infantry Day was celebrated to remember those in the infantry.

Major Mamao said this clean-up at the ashram would not be their last.

Ashram residents were very grateful to the officers, saying it was indeed a humanitarian act.
