A GOLF tournament is being organised at the Lautoka Golf Club this Saturday in memory of late champion Lautoka golfer Raghwan Krishna.

The 18 holes Western Open is being sponsored by Krishna's family member John Bernard and his family from the US.

In a statement to Times Sport, Bernard said the tournament might become an annual event depending on the response from golfers towards it.

"The late Krishna was one of the top golfers to come out of the golf link course and competed in many of the national events at all the golf courses in the country," he said.

"He rubbed shoulders alongside our very own Vijay Singh, 1987 SPG team gold medalists the late Vilikesa Kalou, Dharam Prakash, Mahmood Buksh and Shiu Sami Naidu during which Vilikesa Kalou also won the individual gold and became the only golfer ever to claim the sportsman of the year title in 1897."

Bernard added he had brought in majority of the prizes including a handsome trophy that would be awarded to the main winner.

"I have brought in the majority of prizes from the US and all golfers can look forward towards excellent prizes with giveaways and refreshment," he said.

LGC captain James Krishna said the lucrative sponsorship from Bernard and his family was sure to attract a host of golfers from many affiliated clubs.

"The course is in tip top shape and as usual all the top guns namely Anuresh Chandra, Amitesh Chandra, Munesh Prasad, Ronil Prakash, father and son combination of Abid and Baroon Hussein are sure starters from Nadi," he said.

"Some home club (LGC) reps that will play include Suren Pillay, Prem Chand, Alvin Sharma, Gaffar Ali, Mohd Shariff and John Krishna."

The wife of late Raghwan Krishna, Reggina Krishna will do the prize presentation after the event proper on Sunday.

Tee off for the event will be between 10am to 11am.
