MORE than 1000 people are expected to converge at Labasa's Subrail Park when the inaugural Northern Crime Prevention Carnival begins today.

Northern Crime Prevention Committee chairman Parmod Chand said they expected people from as far as the garden island of Taveuni, Saqani, Udu and Bua to attend.

"This is a time of festivity and there will be entertainments and activities organised throughout the three days. The carnival is not only about increasing awareness on crime prevention but it's also a time of socialising and mingling with one another.

"It's about time the northern people unite and work together for the purpose of building a better and safer environment."

Mr Chand said the carnival would commence with a float procession through Labasa Town at midday.

"We are inviting members of the public to come out in large numbers because this is a carnival worth supporting," he said.

Eight contestants are vying for the crown which will be presented to the winner on Saturday night.

The Commissioner Northern Lieutenant Colonel Ilai Moceica will be the chief guest at tonight's official opening.
