MOST farmers in Vanua Levu will harvest their cane next week, says the National Farmers Union president Surendra Lal.

With crushing expected to start next Friday, Mr Lal said farmers would harvest a few days before to supply cane to the mill for the crushing day.

We have visited farmers around Labasa and most will harvest their cane next week and not this week because of the continuous bad weather we have experienced over the past months, he said.

Some farmers are also arranging for transportation and labourers as well to harvest the cane farms when the new season starts.

Right now, its just preparation period for farmers including those in Seaqaqa.

The NFU estimates that 400,000 tonnes of cane will be harvested this season in the north.

Mr Lal said the farmers were doing all they could to get all their cane harvested this season.

Standover cane has been a big issue for the farmers, so we are working with them to ensure their farms are all harvested this season.

Farmers continue to look for assistance and we hope the authorities will step in to help us this season.
