JOANNE Vaetiti looks forward to creating awareness on drug-related issues at the upcoming Northern Crime Prevention carnival next week.

Miss Vaetiti, 22, is among the eight contestant participating at the three-day carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa, Vanua Levu.

She will be representing Tukavesi, Tunuloa in Cakaudrove.

"Even though I am not originally from Tunuloa, my participation will allow me to help raise awareness on the effects of drugs," the Kioa islander said.

"A lot of drug-related cases are reported from the district and it's only proper we help them so they are able to create a crime-free society.

"People can change and there is no need to stigmatise those who engage in drug-cultivation because it won't help them become better citizens," she said.

Miss Vaetiti said she aimed to impart a positive message to the youths so they don't follow the wrong path.

The carnival starts next Thursday.
