PONSAMI Mudaliar finally retired from being a taxidriver in Labasa after 50 years of service.
Members of the Labasa Taxi Association farewelled him during their extraordinary annual general meeting at the weekend.
Mr Mudaliar received two certificates for being the longest-serving proprietor and driver and a trophy as a token of appreciation from the association.
During my years of driving, I have never breached any road rule or received any penalty from the police and the Land Transport Authority, he said. I still can drive but its best I retire now as old age is catching up on me.
For me, driving was the only activity in mind when I left school and in 1962, I pursued it, he said.
Mr Mudaliar said his five childrens education was made possible through the income he received from driving.
He thanked association members for being there for him when he needed them.
Association president Mahendra Pratap Singh said Mr Mudaliar was one of the best because he was law-abiding and loyal to his job.
He deserves to be rewarded because he was such a faithful man to his work.
