Babasiga Ashram residents in Labasa were yesterday visited by a delegation from the Indian Cultural Centre.
ICC director Dr Kamal Kishor Mishra said the contribution of food items was part of their social and cultural responsibilities in trying to offer a helping hand to the less fortunate in society.
“This is the first time we are donating something to the senior citizens of Labasa and it is out of goodwill,†he said. “We decided to give them a surprise visit so they know that the Indian government is also here to support them.
“We care for these elderly people and I believe it’s best to come and mingle and share a light moment with them because most of them are not often visited by their own true relatives.â€
Dr Mishra said this would not be the only visit as they had more planned.
Ashram staff Margorie Susau thanked the ICC for the gift, saying it was indeed a kind act.
“We are very grateful for the donation and it’s really encouraging to witness that the ICC has the heart for residents up north,†she said.
