THE new Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Kaba, whose traditional seat is at Bau Island, will not be known for another three weeks.
The Turaga Tunitoga, Ratu Veiwili Komaitai, confirmed there had been no decision on who the new title holder would be. A meeting was held at Bau on Saturday, which began at 10am and ended at 9pm, where it was reported that both the Cakobau brothers, Ratu Joji and Ratu Epenisa, who are two eligible for the title were present.
“The decision on the appointment of the vunivalu has to be unanimous â€" only then can we make the appointment,†Ratu Veiwili said. “The new vunivalu has not been appointed. We will have the meeting again after three weeks and see then.â€
Ratu Joji is the eldest son of the late Vunivalu, Ratu Sir George Cakobau, from his first marriage. Ratu Epenisa is the eldest son from his second marriage.
The title has been vacant since 1989 when Ratu Sir George passed away. The Turaga na Vunivalu is also the paramount chief of the Kubuna Confederacy.
