A 41-year old farmer who threw a piece of cement block at his 42-year old wife was given a nine-month suspended jail sentence by the High Court in Lautoka.

Are Lupo of Nakavu Village in Nadi was handed the suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

According to court records, the victim suffered severe injuries which included swollen abrasions on her right shoulder.

The incident occurred on the morning of February 26, 2011.

The victim had been washing clothes at their home in Nakavu Village when Lupo started complaining about their house and the fact that it was dirty.

The victim argued that she could only do the housework on Saturdays because she was busy at work during the week.

Upon hearing the victim's argument, Lupo then threw a basin on her face and when she proceeded to walk away from the accused he then threw a block at her.
