Help for family

GOOD Samaritans have stepped in to help a family in Labasa who have been without proper sanitation facilities and water supply for the past 14 years.

Community worker Selina Lee Wah said business houses had responded and individuals had also given money and offered to build a toilet, bathroom and water system.

Former Fiji residents living overseas have also helped out by sending cash for the family.

Shiu Wati and her family, who live at Tovata outside Labasa Town, are without a proper water supply, toilet and bathroom.

She has lived in a spacious lean-to house with her two daughters and takes care of her mentally-challenged brother.

Mrs Wati has had to depend on neighbours for water.

Her daily routine includes a 15-minute walk through a bushy track with her water containers and buckets to fill water in from the neighbour's house.

Mrs Lee Wah said a new piece of land had also been given to Ms Wati where the construction of the new toilet, bathroom and water taps would take place.

She said the family had depended on the monthly assistance from the Ministry of Social Welfare.
