Funds halt road works

THE Fiji Road Authority is working to restore roads and bridges damaged by flooding in the Western Division.

West road engineer Munsami Naidu says only one road is still closed to traffic while all other roads and bridges have been reopened.

"More than 15 roads were closed after the floods but as of now, we are only left with Balenabelo Rd in Sigatoka to be cleared.

"We expect this road to be opened this week and to allow the movement of vehicles in the area.

"The majority of these repaired roads have been opened temporarily and we're still waiting for funds so we can permanently fix them," Mr Naidu said.

He added the government had spent more than $5million for the temporary maintenance of the roads.

"Our main focus is to provide services to all areas affected by the floods and we are glad that more than 90 per cent of the work has been completed.

"But again we still need to fully repair these roads that will cost us more than $15.6million."

Mr Naidu said roads to Tukuraki and neighbouring villages in the highlands of Ba that were blocked by landslides had been reopened.

Mr Naidu said the Ba highlands were one of the most badly hit areas. "Rain is another problem to our work but we've managed to temporarily fix the road which allows only four-wheel drive vehicles through to Tukuraki.

"Once we receive government funding, work will resume for the temporary maintenance of these roads and to allow free access of all vehicles.

Mr Naidu said the authority would complete the first phase of repairs this week at Balenabelo.
