30km walk for Rt Epeli

PRESIDENT Ratu Epeli Nailatikau will walk 30 kilometres tomorrow to raise awareness of climate change.

A World Wildlife Fund (WWF) statement confirmed the President had issued the "I Will If You Will" challenge, a mechanism that carries Earth Hour beyond the hour (8.30-9.30pm) every March 31.

In early February, he challenged 20 organisations to visibly implement positive environmental action and in return promised to walk 30 kilometres.

More than 20 organisations responded by adopting eco-plans.

WWF said the President's walk aimed to challenge Fijians to reflect on the implications of their actions on the environment.

As an ambassador for Earth Hour, the President said it was time all Fijians took personal accountability for their impact on the planet and make changes to the way they lived.

He said: "This is a moment of truth for all of us รน we are continuously faced with the threats associated with climate change and environmental degradation; including more frequent flooding and storm events that sweep away dreams, hopes and lives.

"I strongly believe that Mother Nature is urging us to take action."
