ACTING Pacific Oceania Region development officer Gene Ridgway says he is familiarising himself into his new role he took up a few months ago.

Ridgway, who is one of the organising officials at the West Pacific Qualifying Junior Tennis Championship, said the young players were still developing.

"I just took up this job a few months ago. But looking at the performance of these young players I believe they have potential and talents which need to be sharpened. They are developing and it is my role as a development officer to help these kids improve their skills," Ridgway said.

He says the players need more game time to boost their confidence.

The New Zealand native is hoping to help coaches improve their style of coaching. He said he wanted to attract more coaches in the future.

"Part of my job is to conduct coaching education help current coaches improve their coaching. I will be helping the coaches to identify areas where players need to improve and also to help organise tournaments for their countries.

"Most of these players are doing well but if they have more tournaments I believe they will perform much better. I will also want to get more coaches plus I will be looking at sending coaches to Australia and New Zealand."
